Lockdown and Quarantine:

Changes in the organization’s work in connection with the introduction of quarantine measures:

  1. During the quarantine period, StJos. switched to a remote form of work. Children with TB (about 60 people) in the departments of the Children's Infectious Diseases Hospital No. 3 in VO have been strictly isolated since mid-March due to the serious risk of serious health consequences after infection with the virus due to insufficient lung function.

Communication with children is carried out via telephones, as well as through the mediation of medical staff. StJos continues to work on preparing children for school and helping with school education, although it experiences great difficulty in motivating children from a distance. In the absence of a normal learning process (teachers don’t come to children), children are no longer used to regular classes, it’s hard to concentrate, especially on online classes, when control is weak. Children also experience many negative experiences due to the fact that parents are not allowed to visit them. The psychologist conducts individual conversations with children, supports them. (pic 1).

School preparation and tutoring are conducted online and are complicated by the issue of organizing children from a distance. These classes are now also conducted individually. (pic 2)

To interest children, StJos create videos with quizzes for participation in which children receive prizes. Quizzes have already passed on the topics of hygiene rules, the creation of poems, and the writing of fairy tales. (video 1 https://youtu.be/IpZsLkcY3w8). Also, author's tales are recorded and shown to children in the departments thanks to the help of one father who takes care of his little son there around the clock. StJos  also conducts drawing classes via the Internet.

2. Crisis families with children with disabilities suffer most during a pandemic. Especially when parents lose their work and regular earnings (more than half of the families). These families do not have enough money to stock up on food and medicine, to acquire school supplies for children and equipment necessary for distance learning. And they also lack of skills to organize schooling for children at home and conduct leisure activities with them. They are not sure about tomorrow and are subject to great anxiety. Children with disabilities are at greatest risk, they need additional services that are currently suspended.

For parents, StJos conducts online consultations on the organization of the educational regime and additional leisure activities for children, the problems of emotional burnout and parental fatigue. (pic 3).

Thanks to the help of the Women's Club, the most needy 10 families received funds in the amount of 2000 per card for the purchase of food and medicine.

Individual lessons are held with children in preparation for school, reading and mental arithmetic (pic 4).

To do this, a lot of work was done with parents to install programs such as Skype, so that the child had the opportunity not only to communicate with a specialist, but also to see the training materials demonstrated to him. It was not easy for all parents to install and learn new programs; many of them have no experience with their use and understanding of all the capabilities of the gadgets that they have. Many families do not have computers and laptops, so the guys are engaged in smartphones. Most parents had to be motivated and StJos additionally helps them in installing programs so that their children were not left without distance learning.

3. This year, StJos conducted a series of classes on teaching methods of creating cartoons for professionals working with people with disabilities and children in difficult situations. The training was attended by more than 20 specialists who, by the end of the course, independently created cartoons
(Video2  https://youtu.be/q3IDGbo2Iss).

Creating cartoons in non-standard way is suitable for working with children in a hospital, centers for the disabled, at home. The portable installation includes a tripod, lamps that provide even illumination from all sides, and a device for fixing the camera. Such an installation is firmly fixed on the table in the ward or bedside table for the bedridden patient (pic 5).

The purchase of the installation in the photo was paid by the IWC. For Easter, StJos created a small cartoon with the children in the hospital, which they presented to the ladies of the IWC (see video below https://youtu.be/9S2MQxz-h38).
